Photo ID 16632 by John Higgins. UK Air Force McDonnell Douglas Phantom FG1 F 4K, XT597
The Phantom FG.1 is the British version of the McDonnell Douglas F-4K. British Phantoms used the Rolls-Royce Spey turbofan over the traditional J79. The UK was the first export customer for the F-4, starting in 1964. The nosewheel of the FG.1 was able to extend 40" to allow for takeoffs from the smaller British carriers. All Phantom FG.1's were transferred to the RAF when the Navy retired it's fleet of Audacious class carriers in the late seventies. The final FG.1 was retired from the RAF in 1989.
