That's a great project! I heard that they are taking all the F-4's from the bone yard, refitting them, and using them as target drones. I suspect that before too long, whatever is flying will be all that ever is! Unfortunately, though, I have little information regarding how many are currently airworthy. I do know that the Collings Foundation has one (http://www.collingsfoundation.org/tx_f-4dphantom.htm). They claim:
&The roar of the General Electric J79 engines is closer than you think! The 2007 schedule for America's only F-4D Phantom is being developed as we speak and we will post all dates as soon as they become available.& I couldn&t help but notice the word &only&, and am curious as to how accurate that is, as I recall seeing some fly just last year (although they may have still been active at the time). Keep us posted. I'm real interested regarding your findings. Mike |

Yup, all Phantoms will go down in glory by being blown out of the sky. I'm definitely interested in seeing this Phantom in action. I've never seen a Phantom perform a live demo and I heard that it's a sight to behold. Which nations still fly the Phantom in active duty?

Iran also flies the Phantom (F-4D, F-4E & RF-4E) and Egypt (F-4E). It would be nice to find out how many are still flying.

The F-4 is one of my favorite fighters also, the only ones flying in the US that I know of is the one in the Collins Foundation and the ones stationed at Tyndall AFB, Florida. They have at least 5 that I have seen at airshows. The Air Force usually flys them in the Heritage Flight, however this year at Tyndall,
one of the QF-4E's actually put on a little bit of a demo, it was very nice to see them flying again. Gregg |

Hi all, the Phantoms in Germany are still very active! Still flying in two wings,JG74 in southern
Germany (now converting to the new Eurofighter) and with JG71 in northern Germany. The JG 71 Phantoms will fly on until 2012 and will then convert to the Eurofighter. There are also some Phantoms flying with the test unit (WDT61) at Manching AB also in southern Germany. This week the Hornets from Switzerland (7 aircrafts) are flying with the JG 71 Phantoms from Wittmund AB to make some tactics over the north sea. (look to my Pictures here at airfighters.com) Rainer |

The F4 is my favorite Vietnam era fighter....When I was young, F4's used to fly over my house from Cecil Field NAS in Jacksonville, FL. Awesome site.....it angered my mother because they flew so low. I'm sure all of you may already have heard that Col. Robin Olds, who commanded the 8th Tactical Fighter Wing based at Ubon, Thailand...and flew the F4, passed away in June. God Speed Col. Olds and your six is checked.

Israel? I think they are in the process of phasing them to, but they still show up now and then...
Egypt had some delivered in the late 80s too, but I do not know their status now. /N |

FYI Israel retired their F-4s from operational service in 2004. As far as I am aware the Egyptian F-4s are still active, but I don't know how active, they are pretty rare and hardly ever seen outside of Egypt. Cheers John Regards |

And the Hellenic Air Force examples are very much active still. 3 squadrons fly Phantoms here and it looks like they are going to meke it well into the next decade.

awesome. I always thought of the phantom as my favorite jet. It just looks angry sitting on the tarmac, like it's mad that it's not flying missions.

Hi To All
I spent most of my time in the military keeping the RF4C's flying. I go way back to 64-66 stationed at Toul Rosiers in France and later at Ton Son Nhut , Viet Nam. I worked out of the engine shop and did most of my time on flight line and some as a crew chief.Yes it was quite a sight to see them launch in full AB especially on night missions. I remember it was a tight fit putting those J79's in the airframe. I wish I had taken more photos back then but didn't. I regret it now. Anybody got some old photos taken at Toul? We flew RB66's before we converted over to the RF4C. I was their when we lost the RB66 over Germany. It was real hush hush back then. PS I love this site. The Old Sarge |

Ah Phantoms. My favorite subject!
As far as I can see, your list at http://www.thephantomshrine.co.uk/operational.htm looks quite complete. Did you compare it with http://scramble.nl/airforces ? Here some examples from my collections. My Greek phantoms are still in the queue so hopefully i can add them soon. Still have to do something about the Egyptians and the Koreans though :-)
More to come :-) Regards |
